EXTENDED REMINDERS

• Residence halls will be closing for Extended at 5:00pm on Friday, 10/30 and reopen at noon on Monday, November 2nd at 12pm noon. Students whose rides will arrive later than 5:00pm on Friday are asked to wait with their belongings in Bryan Lobby.

• By noon this Wednesday 10/28 all students will submit an Overnight Orah pass for their extended weekend travel plans. 

• You should indicate where you are going for the break, who you are traveling with, and how you are getting to your destination. If you have specific questions about checkout procedures for extended weekends, you should speak to me or a CC on duty. 

• Any students going somewhere other than home and leaving with an individual other than a legal guardian will need to check out with a CC at Bryan desk before leaving campus, in addition to filling out their Orah pass.

• Any students returning to either campus after 10:00pm curfew on Monday, 11/2 will also need to check out at Bryan desk.

EXTENDED WEEKEND CHARTER BUSES

• All four charter buses (Asheville, Charlotte North, Charlotte South, and Wilmington) will load in Watts Circle on Friday 10/30. The buses will be on site at 3:15 to begin loading. Buses will depart at 3:45. Please pack what you want to take home before the last class of the day. Students may bring two large bags and a backpack. Staff members will check you in as you board your individual bus. If you are unsure whether you are registered to ride, please email charterbuses@ncssm.edu.

EXTENDED AMTRAK AND GREYHOUND REMINDERS

• If you are going home for break via Amtrak or Greyhound bus, please submit a pass in Orah, select "Train" or "Bus" as the mode of transportation, and stop by Bryan desk to schedule transportation to the train/bus station. Remember to submit your pass at least 48 hours in advance.

• Africa Fest is November 7th! Each the big culture clubs do a big fest where there are a whole bunch of acts, and we celebrate culture and identities! It's super unique to NCSSm and you should pull up!

IVIS GUIDELINES

• This Friday, October 19th from 8-10pm, we will have an IVIS! Our theme is Halloween-y, so be sure to decorate your doors and rooms spookily ... if you dare!

• No All Hall this go around - I'm trusting you all to efficiently complete Housekeeping Thursday night in preparation!

• Please remember the following guidelines for this event:

  • • No more than 8 people in a room at a time! This is a fire and emergency hazard. 

    • All hall and room lights must be on at all times! This is also for your safety and for the safety of others.

    • Be sure there is a clear path throughout your room, just like for room inspections. 

    • Room doors must stay open at 90 degrees at all times!

    • Keep your room closed and locked for the entire event if not opening your room for the IVIZ! You may come and go if you'd like to attend other events on campus, but you DO need to lock your door behind you!

    • Keep your noise level to a degree that it does not disturb your neighbors, which includes the usage of speakers!

REMINDER ABOUT STAIRS

• Please use stairs to enter/exit buildings but do not hang out on any stairs (including the exterior stairs facing Hill Street.) 

SENIOR BREAKFAST AND PHOTO

• Join us for Senior Breakfast Wednesday morning, 8AM-9AM in the PFM! 

• This NCSSM tradition recognizes the senior class with a meal together as you continue through your final year of high school. We'll have a special menu, silly raffle prizes, and great company! 

• The class of 2027 photo will follow in the ETC courtyard at 9AM. Food will be served until 10am!

HALLOWEEN DANCE AND COSTUME CONTEST

• SAB's Halloween dance is this weekend! Costumes are welcomed (and encouraged,) and there will be a costume contest during the dance. Here are the categories:

HALLOWEEN COSTUME REMINDERS

• Most people do not pick out a costume with the intention of causing harm. Regardless of intention, some costumes still perpetuate harmful stereotypes and trivialize serious matters. To ensure that Halloween is safe and fun for everyone, confirm that you can answer NO to ALL of the following questions:

  • • Does the costume attempt to represent or stereotype an entire racial, ethnic, or cultural group? Does the costume require you to change your skin color and/or is ethnic clothing being used? 

    • Does the costume mock cultural or religious symbols? For example, is a headdress, hijab, or bindis required for the costume?

    • Is the gender of the costume intended to be a joke?

    • Does the costume trivialize human suffering, oppression, and marginalization? For example, is the costume portraying a person who is experiencing homelessness or perpetrators of crime and their victims?

    • Does the costume stigmatize mental illness and disabilities? For example, is the costume portraying an asylum patient or a patient in a straitjacket?  

• Your actions have impact, so be sure to choose a costume that is not harmful. If you are unsure, then it’s better to err on the side of caution and go with a different costume.

PSAT REMINDERS

• Juniors are all scheduled to take the PSAT this coming Wednesday, 10/21. Please Run updates, restart, and fully charge your computer for test day. Testing will begin promptly at 8:00am. Please be in your assigned classroom no later than 7:55am. If you are late, you may not be able to test.

• Cafeteria will open for breakfast at 7:00am. See email from Ms. Younes with more information!

VISITOR GUIDELINE REMINDERS

• Students are responsible for the actions of their guests including any misbehavior or damage. 

• Students are expected to accompany their guests at all times while they are on campus.

• Visitors are allowed during the following hours: 

  • • Monday - Thursday 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM -- we have been seeing a lot more visitors on weekdays staying later than they should

    • Friday 8:00 AM - 10:55 PM

    • Saturday 9:00 AM - 10:55 PM

    • Sunday 9:00 AM - 9:55 PM

OFF CAMPUS TRAVEL GUIDELINES

• Sunset is getting earlier and earlier. Time change happens on November 1. On November 2, sunset is about 5:21pm. Our walking/biking/jogging/etc. curfew is sunset, not dark. Please keep this in mind when planning your after school trips off-campus.

• Wednesday October 21st after check in the Lounge: DnD One Shot Character Creation! Do you have any interest in Dungeons and Dragons? Have you ever wanted to create your own original character? This is your time to do BOTH at the same time! At this workshop we will learn a little bit about DnD and create a character fit to play DnD. If we have enough interest, we could even do a super short, mini campaign!

• Friday October 23rd 8-10pm: IVIS! This is a great opportunity to get your room cleaned, organized, and decorated for the spooky season, or just spiffied up for your friends to come visit! We will discuss procedures for IVIS next Hall Meeting!

• Saturday October 24th 3-5:30pm: Trip to Firefly Farm's Haunted Barn! An alumni of 2nd Beall and NCSSM has a U-Pick Flower barn, with horses, donkeys, chickens, and barn cats, and there are fields of flowers that you're invited to walk through and enjoy! Any flowers you pick while there can be brought back home with you. This trip is special, though, since every Saturday in October the barn is transformed into a Haunted House, and Saturdays the Haunted Witch is an actor inside! It is of no charge to NCSSM students.

HALL AGREEMENT REFRESHER

• We have the printed version of our Hall Agreement! Please be sure to sign the bottom of the Agreement before leaving the lounge this evening. 

• Just a quick reminder about noise on hall - we all agreed that noise after check should be avoided, and loud conversations should be moved to individual rooms, or in the lounge if folks are not using it as a quiet study space. 

• Please be courteous around each other. Please recognize when you may be very loud in the hallway after check, and move your conversation to a different space. 

• Consider spaces like the IT Suite and Bryan Lobby for quiet study spaces, as well. 

• See Page 35 in the NCSSM Student Handbook for more information about noise levels:

  • • "After the first quarter ends, there are no designated evening Study Hours. However, the hours from 8:00 PM until 8:00 AM are considered “Quiet Hours.”

    • "Being excessively loud at other times is discouraged. Students are asked to be mindful of their noise level during the day because classrooms and offices are located in all residential buildings and because other students may be sick, napping, or studying in their rooms during their free periods."

GUESTS ON HALL

• We agreed in our Hall Agreement to announce guests on hall when they enter. This means you walk to the front door of the hall, open it for them, shout "GUEST ON HALL," and accompany them the entire time they are with you. 

  • • This goes for off hall residents, family members, and all non-2nd Beall residents. 

• We should not see 2nd Beall student giving their keys to off-hallers so that off-hallers can key themselves in. 

• We should not see off-hall residents keying themselves in to hall by themselves, ever. 

• At the end of the day, this comes down to common courtesy for each other, respect, and safety. While you know the person you are inviting onto hall, the other 30 students that you live next to may NOT. They would appreciate a heads up that a non 2BL resident is on the hall. 

FALL BREAK ELECTRONICS AND FRIDGES

• Be sure to unplug all electronics before you leave for Fall Break. While you are not required to unplug/defrost your Fridge for this break, be sure to clean out all food that won't be good in a week to avoid having to deal with gross stuff when you return! You should also be sure to take out all trash and take care of any dirty dishes before you head out.

HUNT KITCHEN

• Hunt Kitchen closes at noon on Friday 10/2 for the break. When you use Hunt Kitchen, be sure to clean up after yourself as soon as you are done; turn off all ovens, wipe the countertops, wash your dishes and take them with you. If we can't work together to take care of the space, we may have to close it sooner. 

IN BUILDING CURFEW

• You cannot leave your building after check without an employee. You cannot open an exterior door to let someone into your building. 

• Related, make sure you are taking your trash out before in-building curfew.

EARLY CHECK

• We offer early check because we want to give tired students an option for signing check when they want to go to bed before 10pm or 11pm. 

• We are a little worried about students misusing early check, e.g., signing early check because of not wanting 'to be bothered' to sign check later in the night. If we can't trust that students who sign early check are going to bed, we may have to stop offering early check. 

• Accounting for all students at check is one of the School's most important tasks we do every day and we appreciate you all during your part to make that go smoothly.

• Anytime you are missing check, signing out overnight, or traveling 30+ miles from campus, you have to sign out with the CC on duty. It is not enough for your family to just approve your pass, we need to confirm the ID of the person picking you up vs. what your family approved and to activate your pass.

ROOMMATE AGREEMENTS

• All doubles and triples must submit a roommate agreement by TODAY, September 14. Only one individual from the room should submit a form, but EVERYONE should be involved in creating the roommate agreement. Students in single rooms do not have to complete a roommate agreement. Once the form is submitted each roommate and the CC will receive a copy. Please note that students can revisit the roommate agreement at any time and make changes, as needed.

• As you complete your roommate agreement keep in mind that communication is the single most important factor in building good relationships with your roommate(s). By working with each other, this roommate agreement will help you and your roommate(s) begin the process of discussing issues that have often been found to be sources of conflict. Be honest with yourself and your roommate(s) now, so issues can be addressed before they arise and enter the discussion with an open mind and be prepared to compromise whenever reasonable.

• You may think conflict between you and your roommate will never happen - that's not exactly realistic, though we understand why you may think that right now! Even if you think you and your roommate will be on fantastic terms throughout the entire year, please make a plan for what happens when you DO have a disagreement, or when someone IS feeling pretty crappy, and maybe they don't know how to express those feelings. 

• You may feel uncomfortable reading the prompts out loud and you may not want to hurt anyone's feeling or assert your boundaries. I challenge you to sit in the uncomfortability knowing not only are you are advocating for yourself, but also for creating a stronger relationship with your roommate(s). 

• What kind of roommate do you want? What kind of roommate are YOU? What kind of a roommate do you need to succeed here at NCSSM? What kind of boundaries do you feel are necessary when you live an arms length away from someone who isn't family?

• I will be reading all Roommate Agreements, and check in if I have any questions!

EG ELECTION SEASON

• Juniors, be sure to come to JSen speeches at 8pm on Wednesday in the ETC Courtyard! Voting will then run from 10pm Wednesday to 10pm Thursday with JSens being announced Friday!

INDOOR WHEEL USAGE

• You should not be using roller skates, skateboards, bikes, or other various wheeled vehicles inside. If you are going to roller skate, be sure you are not wearing them indoors (change shoes when you come back inside). This keeps you and your hallmates safe!

FANTASY SPORTS LEAGUES

• Not having a punishment in your fantasy sports league keeps the game focused purely on friendly competition and bragging rights. Only positive rewards at the end of the season! There cannot be any humiliating or embarrassing tasks for last-place or poor performers.

BATHROOM REMINDERS

• Remember to change the toilet paper roll if you are the person to finish it, or you notice it only has a few squares left. 

• Consider wearing shower shoes! Consider having a pair of slides or flip-flops that is exclusively for you to wear in the bathroom and while taking a shower. 

JUNIOR PHOTOS

• Junior photos will be taken on September 1st (TOMORROW!!) from 12-6 pm in the ETC Lobby. Juniors can come whenever they are free between 12 - 6 pm for their photo. Proofs will be mailed to the student's home address and to family NCSSM email accounts within 2-3 weeks. Date(s) for make-up photos will be shared later.

PERIMETER REMINDER

• After sunset, the perimeter of campus (the sidewalk that circles campus including the woods on Sprunt Avenue; the back of the PEC, the IM and soccer fields, and the picnic areas on the west side of the maintenance building) is a restricted/off-limits area. We make a slight exception to this for students waiting at the bus stop for bus #1. If you are on Bryan lawn after sunset, you need to be on the side closest to the Bryan circle and under the market lights.

ROOMMATE AGREEMENTS

• All doubles and triples must submit a roommate agreement by September 14. Only one individual from the room should submit a form, but EVERYONE should be involved in creating the roommate agreement. Students in single rooms do not have to complete a roommate agreement. Once the form is submitted each roommate and the CC will receive a copy. Please note that students can revisit the roommate agreement at any time and make changes, as needed.

• As you complete your roommate agreement keep in mind that communication is the single most important factor in building good relationships with your roommate(s). By working with each other, this roommate agreement will help you and your roommate(s) begin the process of discussing issues that have often been found to be sources of conflict. Be honest with yourself and your roommate(s) now, so issues can be addressed before they arise and enter the discussion with an open mind and be prepared to compromise whenever reasonable.

• You may think conflict between you and your roommate will never happen - that's not exactly realistic, though we understand why you may think that right now! Even if you think you and your roommate will be on fantastic terms throughout the entire year, please make a plan for what happens when you DO have a disagreement, or when someone IS feeling pretty crappy, and maybe they don't know how to express those feelings. 

• You may feel uncomfortable reading the prompts out loud and you may not want to hurt anyone's feeling or assert your boundaries. I challenge you to sit in the uncomfortability knowing not only are you are advocating for yourself, but also for creating a stronger relationship with your roommate(s). 

• What kind of roommate do you want? What kind of roommate are YOU? What kind of a roommate do you need to succeed here at NCSSM? What kind of boundaries do you feel are necessary when you live an arms length away from someone who isn't family?

• I will be reading all Roommate Agreements, and check in if I have any questions!

EXTENDED REMINDERS

• IF YOU KNOW YOUR TRAVEL PLANS FOR THE EXTENDED RIGHT NOW, PLEASE PUT IN YOUR ORAH PASS RIGHT NOW, BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE LOUNGE!

• Residence halls will be closing for Extended at 5:00pm on Friday, 9/4 and reopen at noon on Monday, 9/7 at 12pm noon. Students whose rides will arrive later than 5:00pm on Friday are asked to wait with their belongings in Bryan Lobby.

• By noon this Wednesday 9/2 all students will submit an Overnight Orah pass for their extended weekend travel plans. 

• You should indicate where you are going for the break, who you are traveling with, and how you are getting to your destination. If you have specific questions about checkout procedures for extended weekends, you should speak to me or a CC on duty. 

• Any students going somewhere other than home and leaving with an individual other than a legal guardian will need to check out with a CC at Bryan desk before leaving campus, in addition to filling out their Orah pass.

• Any students returning to either campus after 10:00pm curfew on Monday, 9/7, will also need to check out at Bryan desk.

• REMEMBER: EXTENDED WEEKENDS ARE THE ONLY TIME YOU MAY LEAVE CAMPUS WITH AN OVERNIGHT ORAH PASS AND NOT SIGN OUT AT BRYAN DESK. I WILL PUT A NOTE IN YOUR ORAH PASS THAT LETS YOU KNOW IF YOU NEED TO SIGN OUT AT BRYAN DESK. PLEASE READ MY NOTES!

EXTENDED WEEKEND CHARTER BUSES

• All four charter buses (Asheville, Charlotte North, Charlotte South, and Wilmington) will load in Watts Circle on Friday September 4. 

• The buses will be on site at 3:15 to begin loading. Buses will depart at 3:45. 

• Please pack what you want to take home before the last class of the day. Students may bring two large bags and a backpack. Staff members will check you in as you board your individual bus. 

• If you are unsure whether you are registered to ride, please email charterbuses@ncssm.edu. 

EXTENDED WEEKEND GREYHOUND AND AMTRAK

• If you are going home for extended weekend via Amtrak or Greyhound bus, please submit a pass in Orah, select "Train" or "Bus" as the mode of transportation, make sure to list the departure time of your train, and stop by Bryan desk to schedule transportation to the train/bus station. Remember to submit your pass at least 48 hours in advance. 

• If you need transportation back to NCSSM on Monday September 7th, please make sure to let the CCs at Bryan Desk know as well. 

HALL AGREEMENT DISCUSSION

• A Hall Agreement is a visual way for residents to indicate which values they think are most important when living in a residential community, unique to us. It can also be a working document, one that changes throughout the year as we see fit! 

• Last week, we collected statements to be condensed and turned into a hall agreement. This evening, I will read these statements for you all to receive feedback on. After the Extended, there will be a physical copy of the agreement for us to sign as a hall, and be hung up!

MINOR VIOLATIONS

• Thank you everyone for working hard to remember our check times, signout, and walking off campus policies! 

• We always want to give students time to get into the swing of things and adjust to being on campus. Now that almost 2 weeks have passed, we wanted to make sure you know that we will begin issuing minor violations for walking off campus concerns, signout issues, and missing curfew check starting Wednesday, August 26th. 

• Minor Violations are designed to be a formal reminder about our policies, and their consequences are designed to help you build good habits around those policies. (For example, the first consequence might be a warning and reminder to review specific parts of the Student Handbook related to the violation.) 

• If you have any questions about walking off campus, signouts, or curfew check, please ask!

SENIOR PHOTOS

• Senior photos will be taken on August 25th, 26th, and 27th from 12-7 pm in the ETC Lobby. We ask that students with last names beginning with the letters A-H come on the 25th, last names beginning with the letters I-R come on the 26th, and last names beginning with the letters S-Z come on the 27th. 

• Students with conflicts may come on any of the days but to avoid delays and long wait times on the last day, please try to have your picture taken on the designated day. DELIVERY REMINDERS

• Be sure that you put the right address for deliveries, 1912 W. Club Blvd. will get them to the Bryan lobby and the deliveries tables. (Although, people DO have lots of luck with 1219 Broad!)

• Orders need to put in an hour before in-building curfew to make sure they get here in time. (AKA 9pm Sunday - Thursday, and and 10pm Friday and Saturday). 

• Do not let people you do not recognize into the buildings. We've had Door Dash delivery people let into the ground PFM entrance or into residential buildings. This additionally goes for Hill residence hall and the PFM entrances. 

HOUSEKEEPING REMINDERS

• WONDERFUL job on Housekeeping last night! We are shaping up to be a very clean and considerate hall, and it makes me very proud. 

• As you can see, we have a lounge trash can again! It will periodically disappear throughout the year to prevent overloading, so please be aware of that. 

  • Whenever it is here, please DO NOT throw the trash you collect in your personal room into the lounge trash can. It is disrespectful to each other, those of your peers that throws out the lounge trash during Housekeeping. Find out who is taking trash out on Housekeeping nights, and walk your own room's trash out with them!!

  • The kind of trash that goes in this can is trash you make IN THE LOUNGE! That would be if you microwave food in here and throw out the box, if you're painting or crafting and have paper trash to throw out, etc,.

EARLY CHECK REMINDERS

• We love when students early check! Gives you an opportunity to get some mcuh needed rest, and not stay up until check time in order to head to bed. 

• Just a reminder that Early Check assumes that you are fully ready for bed when you go down to Bryan Desk to sign. This means you've showered, done your whole routine, and maybe only have to put your PJs on before heading to bed. You should not be seen in the lounge, walking around on hall or somewhere else on campus, etc. You shoudl be in bed and asleep shortly after early checking!

• Additionally, if you are looking to Early Check on a Monday night when we have Hall Meeting and Room Inspections, please let me know by sending me a message or a text. If you are looking to Early Check on a night when you have Housekeeping, please speak with your RLAs either in person or over text so you all can make a plan on when you will complete your tasks. You are welcome to early check on a Housekeeping or Hall Meeting night, but the appropriate people need to know! Additionally, I strongly suggest you do not early check on a Monday night, as it's one of the only times we can guarantee us all together, and that community time is super important to us!

• On the provided index card, please write 3 - 5 sentences/statements that you feel encompass what you need in order to feel seen, heard, safe, and supported on hall. 

• Some questions to think about as you write and ponder:

  • • What do I appreciate in a hall mate?

    • What hours of the night should the hallway be quiet?

    • If I'm going to the PFM, would I like for others to invite me to sit with them?

• Some examples may include:

  • • We will delegate the removal of critters and bugs towards those that feel comfortable with said removal. 

    • We will keep the Lounge tidy and organized, and ensure community items and utilities in the lounge are returned as we found them. 

    • We will be respectful of student's favorite showers, and take turns when necessary.

    • We will ensure language used on hall is appropriate, non-offensive, and inclusive of all students.

    • We will keep the hallway a quiet and respectful space after check time. 

• Your leadership team will condense and summarize these statements and present them to you next week. If your individual statement is not word for word on the agreement, please be aware that we take all statements into account, and blend ones we think are similar!
