GREENWINGS ECO-BRICKING DRIVE
Green wings is excited to announce our Eco-bricking Drive during which Halls will compete to submit the most Eco bricks from September 20th - February 20th!!
An Eco brick is a cleaned plastic water bottle filled with non-biodegradable waste. These bricks will be used as building blocks for the SPL garden beds project. The collection sites are labeled boxes in the art studio entry way and Woolworth. The hall that collects the most bottles will win a donut party.
HALLOWEEN WITH SAB
Mark your calendars for our Halloween Dance on 10/25, which will feature our annual costume contest (including prizes sponsored by Chicken Bee)!
We also will have campus wide trick-or-treating on Wednesday, 10/29!
VISITORS AND 'CUTTING THROUGH'
I've seen the majority of folks announcing their guests, whether it be family or another student here, and I thank everyone who has been doing that! I'm hearing that some students are using our hall and the back stairway as a means to get to other places on campus, instead of exiting out the front main hall doors, as well as not remaining with their guests while they are on hall.
I'd like to give you a reminder that folks who do NOT live on this specific hall should NOT be on this specific hall without an escort. Even if they live on campus, and know their way around the hall, you should be with your visitor at all times.
You should meet them at the door, announce them, walk them to your room or the lounge, stay with them while they are on hall, and then walk them out the front hall doors when they are ready to leave. This goes for students as well as off campus visitors.
This is for your safety as well as the safety of residents on other halls. You may be a stranger to a resident on another hall, and your hall-neighbors should want to keep you and their peer safe.
Please remember that while we are a small campus, over 600 students is still a lot! Not everyone knows everyone. A stranger is still a stranger, whether they go here or not. Each resident on their hall deserves to feel safe, and an unaccompanied stranger can feel unsafe.
This also goes for you visiting other halls! If you are going up or down to visit someone on 1st or 3rd Beall, you should be exiting out the front hall door, waiting for the resident to come get you, and staying with them the entire time.
This also means no one should be using the back staircase as a means to get to other places on campus - i.e. using the staircase and walking through 3rd Beall to get to the 3rd floor, or coming up the staircase to get to the 2nd Floor. the back stairwell is an emergency exit, and we should be treating it as such.
HAUNTED HILL
First and Second Hill will be turning Hill House into an interactive haunted house experience on the evening of Saturday, October 18th. The line will begin in ground Hill at 8 PM and will close at 10:30 PM. This year's theme is Alien Invasion.
"As you all know, an unknown flying entity has crashed into the Hill House roof, leading to necessary repairs. Please join our laboratory team as we investigate the otherworldly beings and make contact with alien life for the first time!"
HUNT KITCHEN
Please clean up after yourself and others when you are done using Hunt Kitchen. This morning (Monday), the kitchen was a wreck: lots of dirty dishes left in the sink, food spills all over the stove, trash on the floor and counters. If we can't take care of the kitchen on weekends, in between professional housekeeping and SAB campus service cleaning up, then we may have to close the kitchen from Friday afternoon through Monday morning. We know that this would have a big impact on students who rely on the kitchen for cooking their meals, especially Hunt students, but we can't have the kitchen continue to be left in such bad shape. If you're invested in keeping Hunt Kitchen for all, please clean it up! You are welcome to stop by anytime and make sure that it is tidy and to help clean up if needed, particularly if you live in Hunt and want to check it out after curfew.
OUTDOOR PING PONG TABLE
Enjoy our new outdoor ping pong table in the ETC Courtyard!
Please avoid using it as a dining table so that we don't leave spills, crumbs, messes, etc. on it and be sure to leave those brightly-colored paddles out there with the table so everyone can enjoy it.
We are already missing our blue paddle; please return it to the table if you find it.
IVIS GUIDELINES
This Friday, October 17th, from 9 - 10:30pm, we will have an IVIS! Our theme is Halloween-y, so be sure to decorate your doors and rooms spookily ... if you dare!
No All Hall like we would do in the past - I'm trusting you all to efficiently complete Housekeeping Thursday night in preparation!
Please remember the following guidelines for this event:
No more than 8 people in a room at a time! This is a fire and emergency hazard.
All hall and room lights must be on at all times!
Room doors must stay open at 90 degrees at all times!
Keep your room closed and locked for the entire event if not opening your room for the IVIZ! You may come and go if you'd like to attend other events on campus, but you DO need to lock your door behind you!
Keep your noise level to a degree that it does not disturb your neighbors, which includes the usage of speakers!

HOUSEKEEPING REMINDERS
Please do not put your personal trash from your personal room into the Lounge or Bathroom trash cans. This is unfair to the people who are taking out the trash as it makes the bags fuller, heavier, and more difficult to maneuver, when you can take out your own trash!
This Thursday, the trash will be taken out by someone on hall for Housekeeping. Please do NOT empty your personal fridges/pantries/snacks and other items into the lounge trash can in preparation to leave campus for the weekend. Please wrap up your own trash and walk it down to the trash cans by the PEC before you leave on Friday. I am more than happy to provide small trash bags if that will assist. You are also more than welcome to go with the folks on Trash or Recycling that week if that will help!
Please remember to tell the RLA on Housekeeping that you have completed your Housekeeping, so they can check you off! We will soon have a cute little sign that will tell you what RLA is on what duty, so it'll be easy for you to be checked off.
FALL ONE ON ONES
It's 1:1 season!! One on Ones (1:1's) are quick, 20-30 minute conversations with me to make sure you're alive and breathing, and provide a quiet space to provide feedback, ask questions, and for us to get to know each other a little more.

HOW YOU ARE GETTING TO YOUR DESTINATION

Students whose rides will arrive later than 5:00pm on Friday are asked to wait with their belongings in Bryan Lobby.
I need you to submit an Overnight Orah pass by WEDNESDAY 9/24 AT NOON!! This is so we have time to check passes and ensure the information is correct, and get a guardian approval.
If you have specific questions about checkout procedures for extended weekends, you should speak to me or a CC on duty.
Any students going somewhere other than home and leaving with an individual other than a legal guardian will need to check out with a CC at Bryan desk before leaving campus, in addition to filling out their Orah pass.
Any students returning to either campus after 10:00pm curfew on Sunday, 10/5 will also need to check out at Bryan desk.
PLEASE BE SURE TO READ THE APPROVAL NOTE FROM MYSELF OR ANOTHER CC!
We use the notes to ask for more information, ask for a re-submission if needed, and to let you know whether or not you need to sign out at Bryan desk with the individual signing you out.
Please remember that an Extended or Break is the ONLY time when you can sign out with an Overnight pass WITHOUT signing out at Bryan desk!

AMTRAK TRANSPORTS

This is to ensure we are able to book vans ahead of time and accommodate all students who want us to take them! If you do put in a pass the same day and need transportation, please call and let Bryan Desk know of this ASAP.
CAMPUS PERIMETER PAST SUNSET
In addition to being the curfew for walking/biking/running off-campus, sunset also means that you can no longer walk along the perimeter of campus.
Page 76 of the Student Handbook has a map that can help outline the perimeter for you! (We're going to update the map, but you can walk along the interior sidewalk between Bryan/Beall/Reynolds and the Bryan parking lot.)
You can scroll to the bottom of these notes to find the map. I will update these notes when the map is updated.
EDIT: A newly updated and color coded map has been put up on hall, next to the giant info board poster.
As a rule of thumb, please ensure that after sunset on campus, you are always underneath a light. For example, Bryan Lawn is a great place to study or hang out because of the outdoor lights, but the hammock that is right outside our lounge is NOT, because there are not lights there (...yet!).
STUDY HOURS
Study hours are still in effect!
For the first quarter, students should be somewhere quiet and working Mon-Thurs from 8-9:30pm.
During Study Hours, because of the emphasis on creating a quiet period of time in order to assist students in adjusting to new academic demands, students should be in a location conducive to study and should not be outside in non-lit areas, playing games, or socializing.
During study hours, students are also expected to refrain from watching television, playing video games, or partaking in any activity that is not related to academic pursuits at NCSSM. (p. 35 of the Student Handbook) - Clubs should not be holding meetings during study hours!
CAMPUS RESOURCES FOR SUPPORT AND EMOTIONAL WELL BEING
We wanted to take a moment to remind you of your social and emotional well being resources on campus.
You can also feel free to reach out to myself (Axel), an RLA, or Tanvi or Elizabeth, who you can find on hall for contact information and who are PCCs within the Counseling department. All of us can provide resources and support as needed, even if you just need someone to talk to.
You can be clinic-ed/counsel-ed out if needed, so please do not let homework or class time make you feel like you cannot speak to someone about things that are on your mind.
PROGRAMMING THIS WEEK:
Monday September 15th - Roommate Agreements due TONIGHT!

HALL AGREEMENT
It's here and printed! Your leadership team compiled all the statements given to us into condensed statements that reflect what the hall wants in a community. Everyone should feel reflected by the agreement!
It will be posted/hung up by the large info board poster, so either before you leave the lounge, or sometime in the next few days, please sign the agreement!
Remember that this is a living document and if needed, we can go back in and edit the wordings, add things, subtract things, etc. If you have any questions about the agreement, please let Axel know!
ROOMMATE AGREEMENTS
Communication is the single most important factor in building good relationships with your roommate(s). By working with each other, creating a roommate agreement will help you and your roommate(s) begin the process of discussing issues that have often been found to be sources of conflict.
Be honest with yourself and your roommate(s) now, so issues can be addressed before they arise and enter the discussion with an open mind and be prepared to compromise whenever reasonable.
All doubles and triples must submit a roommate agreement by September 15. Only one resident in the room must complete the form, but all residents in the room must contribute!
If you have any questions or would like help with your agreement, please stay after this meeting or find me during Room Inspections!
ORAH REMINDERS
For Day/Local passes, please write in your companion(s) if you're walking/biking/etc. off campus.
You should not be logging in with your family's accounts to endorse Orah passes. We want to be sure that your families are aware of your travel plans and that endorsement step is how we trust that families are onboard with those plans. If we can't trust that those endorsements are coming from your family, then we'll contact them each time going forward to get verbal permission for those passes.
Your family can reach out to Justin (plummer@ncssm.edu) or ITS (ithelp@ncssm.edu) for support with Orah.
COMMUNITY REMINDERS
In-room and noise on hall:
You've spent the first few weeks of the school year getting acclimated to life on hall and the flow/schedule of school life. Over the past couple of weeks, we've noticed a lot more noise on hall at night, especially late at night. A large amount of this is coming from students violating the in-room curfew, which we set in place to encourage folks to start winding down their day and heading to bed at a more reasonable hour. Being loud at night has a bigger impact than you might realize in terms of how many students and employees are disrupted by your volume and excitement. Almost every hall's group agreement explicitly mentions noise at night being a concern and something that each hall will avoid. We've given lots of reminders about this up until now, but that doesn't seem to be changing the behavior as readily as we'd like and we really want to support those group agreements' requests and aspirations. CCs on duty will be more likely to charge students being disruptive at night or violating in-room curfew with Minor Violations so that the student, their family, and their support team can be informed about what's going on and offer support in ways that can address the behavior more directly.
Check guidelines:
We rely on each student signing check for themself to account for every student each night. You cannot ask your RLA or someone else in line to sign check for you. Similarly, you should not sign check for someone else, even if you see them on hall; they need to sign check for themself. Since this connects to one of our highest priority, everyone's safety and well being, having someone else sign check for you or you signing check for someone else is considered a violation of the Code of Student Violation, and potentially a Major Violation, since it gets in the way of us accurately accounting for all students at the end of each day.

STUDY HOURS REMINDER
Study Hours are from 8:00 to 9:30 PM during first quarter.
(p. 35 of the Student Handbook)
Clubs should not be holding meetings during study hours!
TAKE A MOMENT AT CHECK!
Please be sure you are taking an extra moment to sign check in the right box each night - this includes in the correct date's column, as well as in your designated row!
PFM AFTER HOURS
In order to allow PFM staff to thoroughly clean the cafeteria at the end of the day, students will not be permitted in the space immediately after dinner concludes. Students may return to the space at 8:30pm Mon-Fri and 7:30pm Sat-Sun.
ORAH REMINDERS
Be sure to make a pass and sign out anytime you're leaving campus. If you are going to miss curfew, travel more than 30 miles from campus, or be gone overnight, you have to make a pass but you also have to go to a CC office to sign out before leaving campus.
Please take a moment to look at the notes left on your Orah pass - usually, myself or another CC will remind you to stop at Bryan, or if there's any pertinent information you need to know about your pass, we'll put it there!
We've heard the Bryan NFC tile isn't working but we've tested it a few times this week and it seems to be working fine. Make sure you follow these steps to end your pass via an NFC tile:
1. Open the Orah app.
2. Select New.
3. Click the Orah logo icon that pops up right above the bottom part of the screen.
4. The app will then prompt you to scan the tile, and voila, you're checked back into campus and your pass has been ended.
If you have any issues with Orah, or the NFC tiles specifically, please email Justin (plummer@ncssm.edu) and he'll be happy to help troubleshoot it with you. The electronic sign out info site may also answer any questions or issues you're having.

RLA ANNOUNCEMENTS
If you're reserving a shower, please do not do so! If there are things hanging outside a shower you would like to use, please set a 5 minute timer from when you found it, and if the student has not come back and gotten their things, you have permission to move their items and use the shower.
Please do not leave your personal trash in the hall trash can. You should be taking your own personal trash out to the dumpsters yourself! Food waste may be thrown out in the Hall Trash.
Please make sure you're taking your personal items our of the bathroom. We understand you may forget things, but it creates unnecessary clutter and it is difficult to complete Housekeeping when items are left behind! This includes in the showers themselves and on the hooks!
UPDATED SUNDAY LIBRARY HOURS
The Library is open on Sundays 12pm-8pm.
Please remember that there are lots of spaces on campus for you to study if you are not looking for a quiet space, such as the Woolworth Room, outside seating across campus, Hunt Main Lobby before Check, the IT Suite, and more!
SPEAKER USE
We do not allow speaker use outdoors for club or social events on a regular basis. We reserve speaker use for SAB and club events on an occasional basis while supervised by staff. Due to the location of our school, we are always focused on being good neighbors and regular amplified sound on campus would impact our neighbors negatively. We still get complaints due to our occasional use of sound but it is easier to respond and get support from neighbors because it is not a nightly occurrence.
AMTRAK SCHEDULE/ING
On Duty CCs are able to provide transport to the Amtrak station between 8am and 9:30pm. If you require transport outside of those hours, Uber is an option, but you will still need to put in an Orah pass and sign out at Bryan Desk.
CHECK
Just a friendly reminder that check is at 10pm Sunday-Thursday and 11pm Friday and Saturday. Please remember it is your responsibility to make it on hall on time, and that missing check for any reason without prior notification of an on duty CC may result in a minor violation.
Please utilize any of the following strategies for ensuring you make check on time:
Set an alarm on your phone for 10:55/11:55pm
Find a "Check Buddy" in someone on hall or your roommate
Ask your roommate to wake you up at check time if you're deciding to take a nap
Refrain from showering close to check time
Utilize Early Check if you know you won't be able to stay up till check time
CAFETERIA REMINDERS
It is your responsibility to take your dishes to the dish room and your trash to the trash can.
The Cafeteria staff is working hard to feed everyone in a timely manner and their job does not include clearing the tables of dishes and trash.
This is a moment when thinking about what is best for the community includes reminding friends at your table to clean up after themselves.
This also includes making sure that items in the cafeteria stay in the cafeteria.
HALL AGREEMENT ACTIVITY
We are going to pass out some index cards and writing utensils! You do NOT have to write your name or any other identifiable information on this paper.
Please write 1-4 statements on this index card that YOU think are most important for a Hall Agreement. Please include vague and specific statements, and please take this seriously! They can be a little goofy, but they should be statements, guidelines, or beliefs that you want to hold each other to throughout the year.
Your leadership team will compile these statements into 10-12 encompassing statements, and we'll go over them next week. If everyone agrees, I'll print out agreement and we will all sign it!
Some examples, if you're having trouble thinking of them, might be:
We will always be there for each other.
We will pick up after ourselves in common spaces.
We will respect boundaries.
We will delegate the removal and eradication of critters and beings with more than 4 legs to those on hall whomst feel comfortable doing said removal.

Saturday 8/23 6 - 7:30pm - Letter To Your Future Self in the Lounge! Whether you're a junior or a senior, you're bound to learn ooddles about yourself this year. Write some questions to your future self, talk about what you're into now, and your hopes for what this year will bring. I'll keep these letters for you, and give them back at the end of the year!

2nd Beall Orientation + Opening Information
HERE, YOU WILL FIND ALL OF THE INFORMATION THAT WE HAVE GONE OVER IN OUR JUNIOR, SENIOR, AND HALL MEETINGS.
PLEASE FEEL FREE TO REFERENCE THIS PPT AT ANY POINT, IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS.
EXPECTATIONS AND GOALS FOR 2ND BEALL:
You are expected to come to every Hall Meeting, promptly after Check, every Monday.
Find more info in the section below!
You are expected to carry out each of the tasks on the Room Inspections sheet on your front door.
Find more info in the section below!
You are expected to complete your Housekeeping, when you are assigned it.
Housekeeping is Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, with alternating tasks and weeks. It is split so that half the hall is "on" one week, while the other half of the hall is "off," and each week will alternate. You will additionally never have the same task two Housekeeping weeks in a row.
You are expected to complete your Housekeeping assignment correctly and efficiently. If you are ever unsure how to complete a task, find an RLA or a Senior, and they can help you. Not understanding how to do Housekeeping is NOT a reason to not do it at all, or do it poorly.
Please check the Housekeeping Sheets the Sunday of your "off" week, so you can see what task you have for the following week. Your RLAs and I will work hard to ensure the names are changed prior to dinner time.
We'll talk more about Housekeeping tomorrow night at our Housekeeping Tutorial, but I did just want to make this point since during move in you may be accumulating a lot of trash and recycling: PERSONAL TRASH AND RECYCLING SHOULD BE BROUGHT DOWN TO THE PEC DUMPSTERS YOURSELF. Personal trash is NOT to be tied up and put in Bathroom or Lounge trash cans, nor is personal recycling to be put in any communal recycling bins.
I expect our Hall to be clean and orderly.
While this includes completing Housekeeping when assigned, I do not want personal items strewn over our hall and lounge. Personal items, when brought outside your room, should return to your room when you leave the area. Similarly, if you are eating anywhere on Hall, you should clean up after yourself, and throw away your own trash.
We are not a hall that thinks "it's not mine, it's not my responsibility." If you see a piece of trash on the floor, throw it away!
I expect you to attend (at least some) programs!
Now, I do not expect you to attend every single program myself and your RLAs host every month!
However, I do expect attendance at some, as not only are these great opportunities for you to get to know each other, but they are great stress-relieving opportunities, off campus opportunities, learning opportunities, and more!
I expect you to be friendly, community driven students!
Second Beall is regarded as a very close knit hall. I want to keep that going this year!
Learn each other's names quickly!
Figure out some class similarities, and what subjects students are good at! (For example, two Juniors on hall may have the same Chemistry class and not even know it. Or, a senior might be a Biology wizard, but you wouldn't know unless you asked!~)
Spend time in the Lounge, or keep your door open sometimes! This allows you to meet others as they are, casually and with no pressure. I myself will be doing the same thing, so that you all can get to know me, too!
Seniors, take the time to get to know the Juniors, and assist them with things they might be unsure about.
Juniors, take the time to get to know the Seniors, and share in your new experience here at NCSSM.
Be respectful of others and their property.
What are some examples of how we can do this?
MORE INFO ABOUT HALL MEETING, ROOM INSPECTIONS, AND HOUSEKEEPING:
You can expect to have a Hall Meeting every Monday evening immediately after check, unless I notify you otherwise. These are mandatory as a student at NCSSM. You should NOT early check on a Hall Meeting night unless discussed with me before hand.
If you know you are going to miss Hall Meeting, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to let me know in advance, and it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to read the Meeting Notes here. Meeting Notes often include reminders, dates and times for events campus and hall wide, and pertinent Academic Calendar information.
You can expect Room Inspections immediately after Hall Meeting, unless I notify the hall otherwise. Please familiarize yourself with the expectations on the sheet on the middle of your door to know what I am looking for when doing Room Inspections.
The highlights of this list include:
Clear pathway to the door.
Dirty dishes are not strewn across the desk and/or other areas of the room.
Food containers, packages, or pieces not strewn across the desk and/or other areas of the room.
No prohibited items.
MORE HOUSEKEEPING INFO
You can expect Housekeeping every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings immediately after check. This is checked by the RLAs, and if you are going to be off campus while you are on Housekeeping, you should let an RLA know.
Housekeeping is split so that half the hall is "on" one week, while the other half of the hall is "off," and each week will alternate. You will additionally never have the same task two "on" Housekeeping weeks in a row.
Please check the Housekeeping Sheets the Sunday of your "off" week, so you can see what task you have for the following week. Your RLAs and I will work hard to ensure the names are changed prior to dinner time.
You should NOT early check the night of Housekeeping, unless discussed with myself or an RLA before hand.
Housekeeping tasks SHOULD NOT BE COMPLETED BEFORE CHECK. The only exception is Trash and Recycling, which SHOULD be completed before check.
PERSONAL TRASH AND RECYCLING FROM YOUR ROOM SHOULD BE BROUGHT DOWN TO THE PEC DUMPSTERS YOURSELF. Personal trash is NOT to be tied up and put in Bathroom or Lounge trash cans, nor is personal recycling to be put in any communal recycling bins.
HALL AGREEMENT:
Please be thinking about some expectations/standards/statements you think would work best for a Hall Agreement!
Juniors were read the Rights and Responsibilites for Community Living at our meeting yesterday, and Seniors should remember those statements from last year. While these statements apply to all halls and spaces on campus, each hall has the opportunity to tailor an agreement to their specific learning and living environment.
Next Monday, August 18th, we will collect a list of statements that will turn into a Hall Agreement that we can post on hall and hold each other to throughout the year.
A Hall Agreement is a visual way for residents to indicate which values they think are most important when living in a residential community, unique to us. It can also be a working document, one that changes throughout the year as we see fit!
Some examples may include:
We will delegate the removal of critters and bugs towards those that feel comfortable with said removal.
We will keep the Lounge tidy and organized, and ensure community items and utilities in the lounge are returned as we found them.
We will be respectful of student's favorite showers, and take turns when necessary.
We will ensure language used on hall is appropriate, non-offensive, and inclusive of all students.
REMINDERS:
There are 4 bed rails at the front of the hall near the Phone Booth. If you want/need one, please take one! Any that are left over by tomorrow night at check will be taken away.
Be respectful of each other and each other's property. Items that belong to someone on hall should be borrowed and returned in the state they were given to you.
Bullying/taunting/intimidation is NOT PERMITTED OR TOLERATED, on hall or on campus. Practical jokes, pranks, offensive language, etc,. are not permitted on hall or online.
VISITOR POLICY:
Visitors can only access building lobbies to sign you out, or you can meet with them outside on campus.
Visitors MUST BE ACCOMPANIED by their Hosts the ENTIRE TIME they are on campus, and this includes your guardians.
All visitors MUST BE ANNOUNCED if they are being brought on hall, i.e. "FAMILY ON HALL," "DAD ON HALL," "SISTER ON HALL," "FRIEND ON HALL," etc.
Off campus visitors are NOT PERMITTED on hall unless you have a legal guardian with you.
Students from an AMAB Hall (Hunt and Hill) are NOT PERMITTED on 2nd Beall under any circumstances, unless during an IVIS (Inner Visitation).
PROGRAMMING/EVENTS
2nd Beall hosts a myriad of programs each month! Some of these are innerhalls, in which we gather with another hall on campus and sometimes these programs are hosted by another CC. All community guidelines are applicable even when you are with another hall or CC.
We want to hear from you! If at any point during the year you have an event you'd like to see happen, please submit them HERE, or tell me or an RLA!
While I cannot accommodate every suggested event or it's preferred time, I do my best to work with the academic schedule and your interests, while also following the guidelines I have in place.
Each week, there will be a section dedicated to 2nd Beall Programming at the end of Hall Meeting notes.
If you have not already added the 2nd Beall Programming Calendar to your individual Google Calendar, please scan the QR code under the large hall whiteboard calendar to do so.

We will gather and walk together to the Auditorium around 4:45pm. This is because we have assigned seating so we sit as a hall.
